Foods for strong teeth and bones
Bone strength is important for people with teeth as well as people who have lost all their teeth and are wearing complete dentures. Strong bones allow for a better and more secure fit when it comes to your dentures.
When we think of foods that help promote healthy bones the first thing to pop in our head is milk. Though milk is a good source of calcium there are many other food options that are equally beneficial. Calcium and Vitamin D are essential when it comes to strong dense bones and teeth. Calcium supports your bones, while Vitamin D improve calcium absorption and bone growth.
The following is a list of foods that you can incorporate into your diet to encourage strong bones and teeth:
A good source of calcium with a 1.5 oz. cube containing 30% of your daily value. Cheese also contains casein, which helps in fortifying your tooth’s surface. Cheese is high in fats thought so you do not want to over indulge.
Fortified with both vitamin D and calcium. 1 cup can contain up to 30% of your daily calcium (the same as milk!) and 20% of vitamin D. Greek yogurt contains an increased amount of protein but less calcium and very little, if any, vitamin D. When it comes to your bones and teeth regular yogurt is your better option.
A high source of vitamin D. A small 3 oz. filet contains 100% of your daily value! Not only is Salmon good for your bones but it contains plenty of omega-3 fatty acids which are good for your heart.
1 cup of spinach contains 25% of your daily calcium and is also rich in nutrients such as fiber, iron and vitamin A. This is a good options for vegetarians or people who are lactose intolerant and cannot benefit from foods such a milk, cheese and yogurt.
Does not contain calcium or vitamin D but it does contain vitamin K which promotes osteotrophic activity in the bones increasing bone mass. The fibrous strands also act as a natural toothbrush.
Helps clean the mouth by washing away food particles and clearing away toxins. Water also helps the mouth produce saliva which fights against dry mouth ( a major agent in tooth decay). Along with eating a healthy diet it is important to include a good cleaning regimen. Brush your teeth 2-3 times a day, floss daily and book regular check-ups with your dentist. If you are wearing complete dentures it is important to clean dentures using a denture brush and a denture paste or a denture cleaning solution. It is also highly recommended to brush your gums with a soft toothbrush to promote proper circulation to the bone.
